A convergence of research from IoT Analytics, GSMA Intelligence, Goldman Sachs, and MIT Technology Review points to a single conclusion: we are wrapping the planet in a sensor ecosystem of unprecedented scale.
IoT Analytics projects the number of connected IoT devices will grow to 40 billion by 2030, reflecting a measured but steady expansion. GSMA Intelligence puts the number at 40.8 billion connections. Satellites image every square metre of Earth daily. Autonomous vehicles generate four terabytes of sensor data per hour. Humanoid robots are beginning to walk through factories and streets, each one a mobile sensing platform. AI systems can finally make sense of all of it.

The conclusion: radical transparency is becoming the default condition of modern life.
I want to talk about what this means for the families we serve. Because the implications for generational wealth governance are more significant than almost anything being written in the mainstream financial press.
The Structures Were Built for a Different World
Most family office structures in operation today were designed with an implicit assumption: that complexity is protection. That opacity creates safety. That the difficulty of connecting the pieces — the trusts, the holdcos, the multi-jurisdictional entities, the disconnected advisers — was itself a form of risk management.
It was a reasonable assumption for the world that existed when those structures were built. That world is ending. Every transaction leaves a trail that AI can now read, cross-reference, and surface in real time. No jurisdiction, no structure, and no legal architecture can fully shield against that.
The Next Generation Is Already Living Here
G2 and G3 successors have never known a world where being on the record was exceptional. They expect real-time visibility. They expect governance that is legible. They expect technology built for a transparent world.
The tension between the incumbent generation’s preference for opacity-as-strategy and the next generation’s assumption of radical transparency is one of the most underappreciated fault lines in family wealth today.

AI and Agentic AI — The Layer That Changes Everything
The sensor ecosystem generates the data. But data without intelligence is noise. This is where AI — and specifically Agentic AI — fundamentally changes the operating reality for family offices and the professional firms around them.
AI analytical tools are already table stakes: portfolio risk, compliance monitoring, real-time multi-entity reporting. RIAs, accounting firms, and tax advisers not using these today are already behind.

Blockchain — Speed, Trust, Traceability
Blockchain does not create radical transparency. The sensor ecosystem is doing that regardless. But blockchain is the only architecture designed from first principles to operate with integrity in a world where everything is visible.
Speed. Legacy settlement infrastructure was built for a world that moved slowly. Blockchain-native settlement removes the friction that three-day clearing cycles represent in a real-time data world.
Trust. When governance decisions are recorded on an immutable distributed ledger, trust is verifiable rather than assumed. The family does not need to trust the institution. They can verify the record. For successors who have inherited a world of low institutional trust, this is not a minor feature — it is the foundation of the relationship.
Traceability. In a world of radical transparency, the structures most exposed will be the ones whose complexity cannot be explained. A blockchain-native architecture makes every decision traceable and every entity relationship legible — on the family’s terms, with permissioned access, not because a regulator demanded it.
Quantum-Resistant Cryptography — The Protection That Survives the Sensor World
The same exponential curves producing 40 billion connected devices are accelerating quantum computing. NIST finalised its post-quantum cryptography standards — FIPS 203, 204, and 205 — in 2024. Cryptographically Relevant Quantum Computers capable of breaking current RSA and ECC encryption are projected to emerge between 2030 and 2035.

Adversaries are already harvesting encrypted data today to decrypt later when quantum computers become available — the “harvest now, decrypt later” approach means data stolen in 2025 might be decrypted in 2030 or sooner. For family offices managing structures with data that must remain private for decades, this is not a future problem. It is today’s design requirement.

By January 2027, all new National Security Systems must be quantum-safe under NSA CNSA 2.0 compliance deadlines. Any platform being built today without quantum-resistant cryptography will require a complete rebuild within the decade — at significant cost and disruption.
